Käringön is located at the very edge of the Bohuslän archipelago and is one of the most beloved islands on Sweden’s west coast. Here salt-sprayed cliffs, narrow lanes, wooden houses and a sense of calm create a place that many return to year after year. Today, around 65 people live on the island all year round and there are more than 280 residential houses.

Walking across the island only takes a short while, but the experience stays with you much longer. From the harbour, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the western side, where the view opens up over the sea, small islands and skerries. Here you will also find the old pilot lookout and on the horizon you can see the well-known Måseskär lighthouse.

In the centre of the island stands Käringön Church from 1796 a natural gathering place with great importance in the island’s history. Pastor August Simson preached here from 1849 to 1900 and left a strong mark on life on the island. Opposite the church is Simson’s vicarage from 1877 with its beautiful garden, a place where you can enjoy good food in an authentic setting during summer.

SEE & DO
Käringön is a place to experience all year round. Here you will find the lively atmosphere of summer but also the peacefulness of autumn, winter and spring. Lobster fishing, New Year celebrations, weddings, conferences, sauna bathing, sailing, kayaking and long walks give every season its own charm.

On the southern side of the island, there are classic bathhouses for both men and women, as well as piers and bathing ladders leading into the sea. For those who want to explore more, a boat trip to Måseskär lighthouse or to Vallerö with its beautiful sandy beaches is highly recommended.

Käringön’s old wooden houses are an attraction in themselves. The old fisherman’s cottage is open as a museum and a guided walk around the island offers many stories about life, fishing and the people who shaped this place.

The island also has a guest harbour open all year round, with 120 guest berths for leisure boats.
